Utilizing Technology

Very recently, businesses have found ways to use technology to save a great amount of money. What was not possible thirty years ago is possible today because of great improvements in technology. When money is saved in one area, more money is then available to reinvest in the organization.

One astounding example of how businesses have used technology to save money is the ever successful airline, Jet Blue. Jet Blue found that if they allowed workers to answer phones from their home, they saved the money it would have cost to have an expensive call center built. To be clear, I am not proposing that we outsource the Libertarian Party’s current phone system, but I am proposing that we look into the many possible ways that we can use technology to save the party money.

One way to potentially save money is to look into open source software. Open source software is free to use and if it could be implemented it would likely save thousands of dollars. For example, on my home computer I actively use Open Workbench, versus the name brand Microsoft Project. This saves a few hundred dollars and Open Workbench performs in the same way that the Microsoft Project does.

Another practical method to increasing production while conveniently cutting costs is to use a service that allows LNC members to conduct meetings in their own towns or cities by video and computer conference. In turn, this would save each of the party members to cut on their traveling expenses. Would this work as well as the old fashioned face-to-face meetings? I have my concerns, but if we could eliminate even one face-to-face meeting a year, it would, perhaps, make it easier and more affordable for many of those that would run for the LNC that had been limited by these factors previously and thus have chosen not to do so.
